I was hoping for a bit more coverage of what was the start of amazing events 20 years ago in East and West Berlin, but then what is there to say?   The Wall coming down was not the start of it all but something that was bound to happen after events at other borders, but it was a huge symbol much as it was when it was built.   A way of life and understanding not only for those involved but also for the whole world, it seems strange that a generation of what would had been East Germans know little of have much interest in it.  We are left now with just nostalgic stories of those who lived in the DDR, employment and purpose for every.  Rose tinted glasses have never been in so much demand.

Anyway, the BBC is showing what has become the “film of the DDR” as Goodbye Lenin.  This truly is a fantastic film I must agree and could, and will, watch it over and over.   Don’t miss also on BBC2 on Saturday 7th, The Secret History of the Berlin Wall.  If any wall could tell a story then it has to be this one:  “Berlin is a place that is indispensable to the imagination, a city where history ticks all the boxes. The longest of all the helter-skelter rides that Berliners have taken through the playground of history ended in 1989 when the Berlin Wall shattered into a million souvenirs. In this film, the dreams and nightmares come dramatically back to life as the spies, informers, double agents and interrogators of Cold War Berlin weave their nervy spells of double lives and double dealing.

Plenty of East German mullets and Trabants on show….
