New Trabant Concept Car due 2009?
January 28, 2008

It’s been in the press all week, the follow on from the scale model “new Trabant” shown last year. A deal has been made with IndiKar to make a concept to be ready for the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. There are still no set plans for production after this, and of course the “new Trabant” will be as much Trabant-like as the new MINI is like the old one (ie, they share the same name and the liking for nostalgic retro).

The Trabant could become a viable means of transportation.
India is producing the “TATA” car, for less than
$2,600.00–and will have a FULLY “western car”
for less tahn $3,300.00–automatic transmission
power window, and air conditioning.
The New Trabant—could have a these options
for under $4,600.00-to-$5,400.00
This is would be quite a day for having two German
cars in competition with each other, the new Trabant
and the always-upgradeable Volkswagen.
Voran–Trabant.

I think, although I would have to look up a reference, that the “NewTrabi” is suggested to sell at around $14,000 and so be against retro cars such as the MINI, Beetle, Fiat500. The TATA car looks like a “basic” car for the masses (using the so called “people’s car” slogan that old Beetles and Trabants had).
So two German cars, but different markets. I think a retro NewTrabi might do well in Germany for the young and trendy who have no memories of the Eastern Bloc. Outside that, I wouldn’t be too sure.
The TATA could be of interest to most of Europe where small and cheap cars are wanted.
