Trabant Wedding

Date January 22, 2008

The date September 11th has taken a bit of a doomed sound to it. But I look back to September 11th 1999, our wedding day, the last sunny day of that year it seemed. The wedding was a small occasion and so we used our own transport in the shape of our Trabant E832 HCD.

The car was running very well for the day, having spent the day before fitting a new arial after someone snapped it off. My only thought at the time was where was I going to tie pink ribbon too if I longer have an arial!

On the day work started early to give the Trabant a good clean and polish, making the car look brand new. My best man tied pink ribbon on the bonnet, only to take it off later for the bride’s car - but it still left me with a small piece to tie on the arial! We turned up at the church and parked the Trabant round the back.

After the service I went to fetch my car to drive me and my wife to the reception, only to find that friends from work had hunted my car down and added their own decoration in the shape of cans, ballons and silly string. Any other day, I would have gone potty, but today was my wedding day!

We drove from the church we crowds of people cheering as the father of the bride played Grease Lightning at a high volume from his car stereo - another surprise, thanks.

Driving around Brighton in a Trabant is not something you can do without people noticing you, so driving in a Trabant covered in silly string, cans trailing behind you, and a bride in the passenger seat is not something you can do on the quiet. Needless to say, during the short 10 minute drive to the reception it seemed like we were part of a carnival with people waving and cars tooting.

The next day we left for a tour of Ireland and hired a car once we were there. It seemed a shame to leave the Trabant at home, but it certainly helped make our wedding the best day ever, and certainly made it part of the family.
